Unaccompanied and separated children and families
The current policies against youth and families seeking safety at our border continue to be targeted with the Iron Triangle of detention, deterrence, and deportation. For over a decade, I've been fortunate to work with unaccompanied and separated children and families in post-release community and detention settings. I've a provided multiple Congressional testimonies and briefings on the mental health effects of detention on unaccompanied children.
Ethiopia mental health
There are few child psychiatrists in this population of approximately 86M, about 42% of whom are under the age of 15 years old. Through an invitation from Addis Ababa University, I provided capacity building through training on culturally-informed systems of care for general physicians and psychiatrists.
COVID-19 Physician Support Line
The COVID-19 pandemic has shaken the world, now entering a new normal of sheltering-in-place policies, school closures, and social distancing enforcement. The number of infected and deaths continue to rise, and health care workers have faced shortages of personal protective equipment (PPE) and the rationing of health care. In response to multiple stories of my physician colleagues, I co-founded Physician Support Line, a peer-to-peer hotline for physicians by volunteer psychiatrists.
